A 15-year-old Japanese author writes an introduction to game programming

A 15-year-old boy named Yuma Sugiyama, residing in Isogo Ward, Yokohama, has completed an introductory book on game programming aimed at beginners. He has been passionate about games since he was in the third grade and became fascinated by the idea of creating games himself. After devouring programming books, he acquired various skills and produced nearly 800 works by the time he was in the sixth grade.

However, he felt unsatisfied with the children’s explanation books, which mainly focused on the basics of game creation. Therefore, Sugiyama decided to write a practical introductory book himself. His writing began in the winter of his second year of junior high school, providing him with an escape from issues such as noise and communication difficulties.

In writing the introductory book, he aimed to provide explanations that even children could understand and pursued content that could be enjoyed while reading. Specifically, he placed chapters on creating simple games at the beginning to allow readers to learn while having fun. Furthermore, he emphasized clarity by introducing characters who directly ask the questions readers might have.

The completion of this introductory book involved assistance from Sugiyama’s father, and preparations are currently underway for its sale and donation to junior high schools nationwide. Through this book, he hopes to spark interest in programming among his peers and look forward to the creation of even more fascinating games by them.

A crowdfunding campaign is underway to create an introductory book, with a goal of 500,000 yen, but more than 2 million yen has already been raised.
