Meta announced on the 2nd that it will begin third-party fact-checking in Japan for posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads to assess their reliability.
Meta is partnering with the fact-checking organization Litmus (based in Shinjuku, Tokyo), which will evaluate posts for falsehoods or modifications. For posts deemed misleading, Meta will reduce their distribution and visibility.
Since 2016, Meta has collaborated with about 100 organizations worldwide for this program. However, personal opinions, expressions, and statements by politicians are excluded from this initiative in Japan.
