Human Resocia, a human resource services company based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, has compiled a report on global IT (information technology) engineer salary trends. Based on data as of October 2024 and converted to USD, the average annual salary for IT engineers in Japan was $30,040 (approximately 4.4 million yen), ranking 31st in the world. Due to the continued depreciation of the yen, Japan dropped in ranking from 26th place in 2023.

According to the latest survey, Japan’s IT engineers rank 31st out of 73 countries in terms of average annual salary, making Japan the lowest among the G7 countries.
Compared to the United States and European countries, the salary level for engineers in Japan remains low. Moreover, it has declined by 16.7% from the previous year, marking the only decrease among G7 nations.
Since the rankings are based on USD values, the ongoing depreciation of the yen against the dollar has placed Japan at a disadvantage from a currency exchange perspective. However, the decline in salary levels and the stagnation of engineers’ wages highlight significant economic policy challenges.
Not limited to IT, the fact that wages are not rising across various industries in Japan—while they continue to increase in other developed nations—will likely become a major obstacle when Japan competes globally to attract talent in the future.
