A company operating restaurants in Fukuoka City announced that their own online shopping website experienced unauthorized access, potentially compromising the credit card information of over 15,000 individuals.
Some card details may have been illicitly used. The affected company is reaching out to impacted customers, urging them to verify for any fraudulent activity. The cause of the information leak is attributed to tampering with the payment screen, allowing for the surreptitious extraction of card details entered by customers. The Japan Credit Association advises cardholders to promptly report any suspicious transactions to their card issuer.
In this case, credit card information entered by customers was tampered with through unauthorized access and leaked to outside parties.
The information that may have leaked included the names, card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes of more than 15,000 customers who made credit card payments between January 27, 2021 and May 15, 2010, and some of the credit card information may have been used fraudulently.
It is generally an ironclad rule that businesses should not allow their security codes to be stored on their servers, and it is not an exaggeration to assume that system development and operation with poor IT literacy caused more damage in this case.
