A tax accounting firm to which the Tokio Marine Holdings Group had outsourced part of its insurance loss adjustment business and other operations was hit by ransomware, and personal information of approximately 63,000 individuals from 21 companies is feared to have been compromised.
The major firms announced the leak on April 10. At this point, no unauthorized use of the information believed to have been leaked has been confirmed.
The 21 companies include Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance, E-Design Insurance (Shigeo Kuwahara, president; Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo), and Tokio Marine & Nichido Anshin Life (Tetsufumi Kawamoto, president; Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).
The number of cases is approximately 4,000, 15,000, and 28,000, respectively. The information includes the names and addresses of policyholders and the details of damage investigations conducted. Also included were information on group employees and former employees, as well as information on salaries of employees of subcontractors.
According to the companies’ announcements, on June 4, 2024, Takano Sogo Accounting Office (Kakuji Takano, President, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) detected an alert on its data server and upon investigation confirmed that some files had been encrypted by ransomware and there was a risk of information leakage.
Investigation is currently underway to ascertain the full extent of the situation.
